ICEBERGS AND SEA ICE

Sea ice and icebergs are common near the Grand Banks.  Sea ice, which is frozen sea water, typically arrives near the islandof Newfoundland in late December and persists until late May. Icebergs, which are freshwater ice of land origin, can move southward with the sea ice, but their population can vary widely.

The following links provide some basic information on the composition, origin and extent of the iceberg population.
