LORAN
EVALUATION TEAM
LORAN Evaluation Team
Background: The LORAN Evaluation Team was comprised
of representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Aviation Administration,
the Volpe Transportation Systems Center, as well as academia and industry.
The focus of the teams efforts were to determine if eLORAN could meet
the nation’s navigation and timing needs. Specifically, the
team conducted research and testing to determine whether an eLORAN
system can provide the accuracy, availability, integrity and continuity:
- To support lateral navigation through all phases of flight,
including Non-Precision Approach (NPA)
- To support Harbor Entrance and Approach (HEA) for maritime
users
- To support Stratum 1 frequency and precise timing users
- To determine what other ancillary benefits can be derived from
the continued provision of eLORAN services
- To determine if providing these services via eLoran is cost-beneficial
The team provided its final report to the Department of Transportation
in March 2004. The report and several enclosures are available below.
