RULES
While reading the Navigation Rules on this site, you should be aware
of some formatting and layout conventions.
- If a paragraph or word is italicized,
that means there is no corresponding paragraph or word in the other
set of Rules. The set of Rules the paragraph or word applies
to will be at the end of the italicized text and look like this: [Intl]
or [Inld]
(e) A vessel proceeding under sail when also being propelled
by machinery shall exhibit forward where it can best be seen a
conical shape, apex downwards. A vessel of less than
12 meters in length is not required to exhibit this shape, but
may do so. [Inld]
- If the paragraph numbering differs between
International and Inland Rules of a similar topic, the numbering
will look like this: (d/f). In all cases, the International
Rule numbering will be on the left and the Inland Rule numbering
will be on the right.
- If the International and Inland Rules are
significantly different, such that the section must be viewed separate
paragraphs, the Rule will look like this:
(i) a vessel
intending to overtake another shall in compliance with Rule
9(e)(i) indicate her intention by the following signals on
her whistle:
- two prolonged blasts followed by one short blast to
mean "I intend to overtake you on your starboard side";... |
(i) a power-driven
vessel intending to overtake another power-driven vessel shall
indicate her intention by the following signals on her whistle:
- one short blast to mean "I intend to overtake
you on your starboard side";... |
In all cases, the International Rule will be on the left and the
Inland Rule will be on the right.
- Minor differences between Rules will be delineated
within the text next to each other. In all cases, the International
Rule will be on the left and the Inland Rule will be on the right.
For example, if the bulk of the text was the same between a particular
International and Inland Rule, but referenced another Rule differently,
the paragraph would look something like this:

shall have due regard to the prevailing circumstances and
conditions of restricted visibility when complying with
[the Rules of Section I of this Part
/ Rules 4 through 10]. |
- Insignificant differences between sets of
Rules, such as "1" vs. "one" or missing words
that don't change the meaning of a Rule, will not be identified.
