District 8 Broadcast Notice to Mariners Message

UPDATE / LA - GIWW IHNC TO FLORIDA AVENUE BRIDGE / CLOSURE / SEC NOLA BNM 0190-26 UPDATE-1 /

Mariners are advised that a 54-inch sewer main remains unsecure and continues to discharge sewage into the waterway. The COTP Sector New Orleans has modified the existing Safety Zone that extends from MM 6.5 East of Harvey Lock (EHL) to MM 10 East of Harvey Lock (EHL) along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW), including the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal (IHNC) Lock with the following restrictions: 1. All vessels shall transit at their slowest safe speed 2. All vessels shall avoid meeting or overtaking in this area 3. While transiting the affected area, crews are strongly advised to remain inside the vessel and avoid contact with the environment. 4. Please utilize the recommendations from Louisiana Department of Health for basic hygiene practices, PPE, and vaccinations that can help protect workers who may encounter water contaminated with untreated sewage. Vessel operators and crews transiting through the affected area are encouraged to review CDC Guidance on basic hygiene practices by following: https://www.cdc.gov/global-water-sanitation-hygiene/about/workers_handlingwaste.html. Daily daylight dive assessments of the damaged sewage line will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will continue for the next several days. Mariners are directed to contact the on-scene dive operations supervisor, Mr. Josh Lambert, Specialty Diving, via VHF-FM channel 67, or at (985) 273-1756 for questions or status updates. Divers can access the work location from shore and will need an approximate 70-foot work area from the bank, The lat/long of the work location is approximately 29° 58.8198’N and 90° 01.3600’ W.
