Item: The Coast Guard announced in the Federal Register the cancellation of several obsolete Navigation and Inspection Circulars (NVIC). NVICs are guidance documents issued by the Coast Guard that do not have the force of law. However, NVICs ensure that Coast Guard inspections and other regulatory actions conducted by field personnel are complete and consistent. Read more...

The U.S. Coast Guard has released its 2020 Recreational Boating Statistics Report, revealing that there were 767 boating fatalities nationwide in 2020, a 25.1 percent increase from 2019. From 2019 to 2020, the total number of accidents increased 26.3 percent (4,168 to 5,265), and the number of non-fatal injured victims increased 24.7 percent (2,559 to 3,191). Read more...

Item: The OCS Officer in Charge, Marine Inspection (OCMI) has released MSIB 21-02, Hurricane Season Reporting Requirements, to provide guidance for operators on the Outer Continental Shelf. There are two minor changes from last year’s MSIB (20-04). The D8 Command Center phone number is now 855-485-3727 (GULFSAR), and FPU’s & FPSO’s are specifically included within the MSIB text. Item: The Navigation Center is now publishing Broadcast Notices to Mariners (BNMs) in filterable, digital format for the 5th and 13th Coast Guard Districts, as well as part of the 1st Coast Guard District. You can search the database using a wide variety of parameters to get the BNMs you need the most. You may view the BNM page now.
